Couch Surfing
Have you heard of this phenomenon?
So Sunday night I went out to dinner with Andre(yes, we’re adorable). After dinner, we go to meet his friend Joao(zhu-oww), who is with a girl. Joao is Brazilian, and has been living in Barcelona for 3yrs. Andre tells me that Joao is always with girls. I like him already. So we meet up with Joao and his female companion, Tao. She’s Vietnamese, but has lived in France, Syracuse, and is currently studying in Sweden. Ill. She’s also kinda cute.
After hanging for a little while, I ask Tao how her and Joao know each other (clever question I know, thought of it myself). She tells me they just met that afternoon. She’s ‘surfing’ on his couch(this is why Andre said Joao is ‘always with girls’…he’s a serial ‘hoster’). Considering this girl is much more wordly than me, I come back strong with…wait for it…’What?’. I was a few Mojito’s deep at this point, so I can’t recall the actual dialogue. To sum it up, ‘couchsurfing’ is a service where people ‘host’ (make their couch available) and people ‘surf’ (stay on said couches). The website is explained to me as a ‘social media’ type setup, a la facebook. People create profiles as a ‘host’ or a ‘surfer’, or both. Then, if someone is going to visit a certain city, and don’t want to pay for shelter, they search available couches in that city. They make a request, and so on. Clearly, I’m both amazed and intrigued.
I’m thinking of sending the following letter to the head of the company:
Dear my potential new best friend aka new and improved Heidi Fleiss,
I just heard about your service and would like to clarify exactly what is going on here as my head is spinning. Are you telling me that I can create a profile, look at girls from all over the world who are planning to visit Barcelona, talk with them, and then have them stay in my apartment? For as long or as short as I want? No strings attached?
Just to clarify my clarification(I’m a sucker for detail), you essentially DELIVER GIRLS TO MY DOORSTEP that are there to SLEEP OVER?????
Thank you for your time.
God bless you and your family.
Love(I mean it),
Chris
So I created a profile. Who knows if I’d actually ever go through with it. It’s weird and different, but I live in Barcelona, so weird and different is par for the course. Stay tuned.
